What is a “Phantom Roll”?

1

Do you ever wake up some mornings and everything you do and see is clouded by a certain perspective? You look in the mirror and think you see that pie you ate in your hips?  You look at your closet and just can not find anything inspiring to wear? Everything you try-on accentuates the flaws you see?  This happened to me this morning.

I’m not sure what’s up with me today but during my morning routine including boot-camp , random fleeting thoughts of fatness and clunky-ness and awkwardness  filled my head.. Thoughts like these completely affect my ability to perform at my best.  I read a blog called The Clothes Make the Girl that calls this the “Phantom Roll” :

Yesterday at our post-Crossfit ring of fire challenge meal, fellow x-fitters and myself were discussing the strange quality of the “Phantom Roll” and how no matter how much weight you lose, the lingering discomfort of being bigger than you want to be sticks around….For a lot longer than it actually should. It’s a strange thing, and most of us feel like complete idiots for feeling this way. Numbers don’t lie. We are all blissfully more fit and stellar than we ever have been and yet, we glance in the mirror and still see our old selves. Obviously this behavior is not rooted in reality, it is reminiscent of an obsession into flaws that were present at one time; but while the actual flaws have lessened in intensity or disappeared all together, the knee jerk reaction to obsess about them is still there in full force.

Ok, problem has been stated, now what the hell do we do about it? I’m not really sure how to answer that question. Rather than bemoan feeling like a 15 year old, I’m going to spend some time and really solidify how fucking amazing I feel. If you feel amazing, you will look amazing, those two are inseparable. I’m hoping the rest will just fall back into line.

I enjoy reading her blog. She has a way of capturing things that you can totally relate too. And while I don’t do Xfit per se, I do find a lot of parallels in our fitness journey.

Following up on my post rest day performance at bootcamp this morning.  Having taken an extra day, I think it worked. I felt better overall and believe that it did show up in my workout this morning. Although it’s important to factor in the fact that I slept more than a lazy house cat these past 4 days off. So it is hard to gauge whether it was the extra rest day or the extra sleep in general.

yoga_collageA friend of mine told me this morning that I should try yoga on my 6th day of working out as opposed to the heavy cardio/weight training or a day of complete rest. Seems that I am missing that element of my overall fitness program. So I may give that a go to see if it makes a difference in my overall  fitness plan.

I want to make sure to not do hot yoga or power yoga to start off with. I have heard great things about both, but I think what I am looking for is just more basic yoga.

Do you have experiences to share about your “phantom roll” as Melissa calls it above?  What about Yoga? Have you found it makes your weight conditioning/cardio workouts that much better?

What a rest day means to me by Stephanie

Well rest is really a misnomer when it comes to my life. So while I didn’t go to the gym – I certainly kept busy physically and mentally. The weather outside was very un-end-of-Novemberish so I headed outside with Hannah and cleaned up the gardens. I should have done it early Fall but have not really had the chance, so it got cleaned up and bagged.

From Livestrong.com:

The act of weeding involves a variety of types of exertion, and the net result is extra physical activity that burns up calories.

Gardening: weeding
This activity burns approximately
400 calories per hour for an average, 145-pound person.

So, while i did not get to the actual gym, I feel pretty good about my activity today.

I also decided to get into the holiday spirit. I watched the Martha Stewart Xmas special on FLN and got inspired to try a few of her craft suggestions.  Hannah and I created the beautiful Snowy Balloon Ornaments.

Here’s the end result. Up close they look pretty. Although not as “perfect” as Martha’s, they are perfect for me. I even went outside and found a branch to hang them from. I am full of pride!

Back to boot camp in the morning. I think it will be nice to get back in the swing of things. It feels like it’s been forever since I have been there – but it hasn’t.

G’nite!

I’m Taking an Extra Rest Day

0

I have noticed that on Mondays during boot camp the last few weeks, I am just extra worn out. I have been doing the 6 days a week exercise cycle for a while now and pushing myself hard. I am going to take an extra rest day for a few weeks to see how it affects me. I need it.  I have been sleeping like a cat this past holiday weekend and I am trying to listen to my body more. Its trying to tell me something, so I am going to listen.

I will let you know how it affects me tomorrow after my 545a workout!

Today at the gym…

0

Today I went to Gold’s gym to start my day. I got on the treadmill and did approximately 4 miles at a pretty decent avg pace of 8:30. Then I went and did some strength training – squats with 25lbs dumbells, 25lbs overhead squats, box jumps (50), push presses 25lb dumbells, side lat 40lb dumbell.

stairmillI then did 30 pushups and ended the workout on the stairmill. If you are looking for a monstrous cardio session, don’t look any further than the stairmill. It get your heart rate up with less hard impact to your knees. Man, this thing is tough. I did 10 mins and rotated between level 8-11. I was drenched even after only 10 mins. I suggest anyone try this one to give you a good change of pace from the traditional cardio machines. Shake your gym routine up a bit!!

There is science behind it

0

I was talking to my friend today at the gym and she was telling me how she can’t seem to lose any weight. She’s already in great shape, has run marathons and works out regularly both cardio and weight conditioning.  I asked her if she still drinks soda – she said one a day. I said well give it up – like it’s easy or something! I gave up all soda a long time ago and I personally contribute it to helping me lose weight faster and help to flatten my stomach even more. I drank diet coke like it was going out of style! I realized that I had been drinking Diet Coke since I was in my early teens and had not gone 24hours without Diet Coke in years! That’s a lot of phenylalanine!  I started off with a goal of 7 days, then had one, then tried for a month, then decided to just give it up for good. I can honestly say that I don’t miss it at all at this point.

I was looking up some info on soda and weight loss/gain:

Diet soda — how healthy is it?

Study: Artificial Sweeteners Increase Weight Gain Odds

Statistical Modeling, Causal Inference, and Social Science

It seems the science is behind it – try giving it up for a day, a week, or even a month and I bet you will find it’s not so hard to give it up for good.
