Generation BMI → Cranky Fitness

Generation BMI → Cranky Fitness.

This is such a good commentary about the fine line between wanting to do something about childhood obesity and damaging self esteem and self worth. Where is that line?

And is BMI the correct assessment of obesity especially during kids’ “awkward” stages? We all have known kids that were chunky or even fat but then come back from summer break and they grew like 5 inches and no longer fit those adjectives.  Tweens/Teens are so tender emotionally in so many ways. Say one off the cuff remark one time, and that could be the one that sticks.

Slippery slope indeed…

What did I do at the Gym Today?

Saturday and Sundays I train on my own. A group of the boot campers run on the Wo&D trail early Sat mornings. I find that although I do enjoy running with people at times, I prefer to work out solo on the weekends. Bootcamp is working solo but within a group so I get the group support then. I like to get into my own head during the weekends. It’s my ME time.

I do some of my best thinking while I am exercising on Saturday and Sundays. Let’s be honest, it’s hard to get real deep or think about anything other than finishing my workout at 545a.

So I head to the gym within an hour or so of waking up. I am so grateful that I have a family that allows me to have that time with no guilt or pressure to do anything else. It’s at the point now where it’s just a given. “Mom goes to the gym in the mornings“.

I have a few goals when I go to the gym. I set a calorie limit and I do not leave the gym until I reach it. I wear my Polar F6 HR monitor so I can make sure that I am exerting the right amount of effort. Ever since I bought it, I have noticed a marked improvement in my workouts.

Today, I ran on the treadmill 4.1 miles at an avg pace of 8:30. Then I go and do some moderate lifting. I did a ton of squats with a 45lbs barbell over my head. I also did lunges back and forth the length of the weight room with 25lb dumbells making sure my knee hits the floor each time.  I added in push presses with 25lb dumbells and some general shoulder/arm work.

I also set goals for pushups. I try to do pushups every day. Today I did 30 “good-form” push ups.
I finished the workout doing the stairmill for 15mins.

Because bootcamp tends to use higher weights and at least in the winter time focuses on muscle conditioning, I focus on cardio more on the weekends. I find running cathartic and helpful for me to lose weight and increase my endurance.

A Tip: Almond Breeze® Original – Unsweetened

I have told a lot of people about this stuff. Its 40 calories and tastes good. I am not a milk drinker but I do like cereal on occasion. A friend of mine told me about this and I have been hooked ever since. I never really liked the taste of soy or rice milk. I really like the taste of this stuff and it’s low in calories too.
