Losing your Job can have health repurcussions.
0A growing body of research suggests that layoffs can have profound health consequences. One 2006 study by a group of epidemiologists at Yale found that layoffs more than doubled the risk of heart attack and stroke among older workers. Another paper, published last year by Kate W. Strully, a sociology professor at the State University of New York at Albany, found that a person who lost a job had an 83 percent greater chance of developing a stress-related health problem, like diabetes, arthritis or psychiatric issues

Quite a few of my friends lost their job this year. It is quite an adjustment and one that takes its toll on your self identity and purpose. For some, it allows them time to stop, breathe, and figure out what can satisfy their hearts. For others, it’s a stress inducing situation that may or may not force them into action. I do find that things happen for a reason, whether we understand what the reason is at the time. This is a good article to read so you are aware of the signs and feelings that people that lose their jobs go through. It’s not an easy time for many of them — but one that tends to work itself out in its own time.
Sunday
1I headed to Gold’s Gym this morning bright and early. I have been itching to run since I haven’t really had a good run in a while – not that a treadmill run beats an outside run – but with winter here, it has to do.
I ran a 5k and then did some light weight training. I am sore from yesterday’s xfit free class, so I kept it light. I did some core work too – 6 in flutters, 40 BOSU push-ups.
I have no real plans today – which is nice. Gonna spend some time doing some home de-cluttering.
Naptime!
0It’s a silly holiday but I figure I will highlight it anyway:
When is it perfectly acceptable to fall asleep in public? On Public Sleeping Day of course! Every year on February 28, we celebrate the beauty of unrestricted snoozing. Today, take a moment or two to celebrate this holiday by dozing off on buses, trains or even on while you’re on the job!
I personally was born with the gift of napping – so any holiday that tells me to nap – heck that’s my kind of holiday!
Enjoy!
To your health!
0I was reading some of the final posts at the Cranky Fitness blog – they are shutting it down. One of their posts really struck a chord with me today. It was about unleashing your inner crab – not everyone is all gung ho about exercising and leading a healthy and fit life. But – they make the commitment to do it – just not necessarily singing along the way! I liked what they had to say in this particular paragraph:
Healthy food takes a while to get used to. If you’ve been eating lots of sugar, salt, unhealthy fats, and refined grains, then you’re just not going to appreciate the joys of fresh produce and lean proteins and whole grains right away. This is perfectly natural; there’s nothing wrong with you. You have two choices: either adjust gradually, or suffer through an ugly transition period. Either way, it’s not a good time to get all pessimistic and think that healthy eating will always be torture. Because it won’t. Your tastes will change with repeated exposure, I promise. The trick is to keep finding more stuff you actually like, so cutting out 90% of the crap that the rest of the world eats doesn’t feel like such a hardship. But this process can take a while, and focusing on the good things you can eat instead of the evil yummy things you shouldn’t is a much more effective approach.
Getting used to eating healthier takes time. And it’s not like you have to go all out. You can follow the 80/20 rule I have mentioned before. Life is about living — not complete suffering and deprivation. I found that doing it gradually worked best for me and even now, I struggle at times.
And if you do fall off track, be kind to yourself, brush yourself off, and get right back on the path. Living a healthy and fit life is more of a marathon than a sprint!
Salud!
Xfit Reston is Open
1This morning, my friend and I decided to check out the opening of the Reston Crossfit that I mentioned before. They had their grand opening, free WOD and since we were their very first class – we got free t-shirts!
WOD 3 Rounds for Time
15 SDHP 65lbs
20 Pull Ups
25 Push Ups
I finished in 10:07.
I wish this xfit facility was closer. I loved it. The coaches were awesome and really went around and made sure everyone’s form was right. By that 3rd round, your form starts to suffer so it’s great that they were so attentive.
They have free WOD every Saturday – you should check it out if you get a chance. Here’s their website: http://www.crossfitreston.com/.

Really? – The Claim – To Cut Calories, Eat Slowly – Question – NYTimes.com.
In a study last month, scientists found that when a group of subjects were given an identical serving of ice cream on different occasions, they released more hormones that made them feel full when they ate it in 30 minutes instead of 5 . The scientists took blood samples and measured insulin and gut hormones before, during and after eating. They found that two hormones that signal feelings of satiety, or fullness — glucagon-like peptide-1 and peptide YY — showed a more pronounced response in the slow condition.
Obesity Summit Attracts Big Names With Stories to Tell | NBC Los Angeles.
When Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger agreed to back a conference on health and obesity in Los Angeles, he recruited an old friend who knew a lot about the subject matter; former President Bill Clinton.
“I believe that until we get a hold of our lifestyles and our food chain and how we eat and how we exercise, we’re going to have serious, serious problems,” Clinton told attendees at the governor’s “2010 Summit on Health, Nutrition and Obesity: Action for Healthy Living” at the California Endowment.
Blogs and Free Stuff
4
As you navigate and interact around the blogosphere, you begin to find your community. Communities that speak to you. One of the things I love is fashion and shopping. I have certainly been able to find a wealth of information out there on these topics. One of the blogs that I found and now has become a daily staple for me is Kim over at Anthroholic. She loves Anthropologie and takes the time to review their clothes and share it with all of us. She also is great at letting us know when things go on sale. Her style is so great and I really have been inspired by her.
Another great thing about visiting these blogs – from time to time, they give away free stuff. Kim is giving away a pair of sweet Kensie sunglasses! Click here to enter.
