Friday Inspirations: Fitness, Fashion & Personality
1Friday’s are my exercise rest day and in my blog I focus on more fashion/health/beauty related topics to end the work week.
I was thinking about fashion and working out. I see so many people that go to the gym or workout and don’t seem to put any thought into their attire. Don’t get me wrong – the point that you are even exercising is duly noted! My thoughts are though – why not make it fun and show your personality while you are sweating and pushing your limits. Here are some trends I have noticed recently:

Cool Old Skool Shirts
People who saw this picture recently seemed to find joy and humor in it – how fun to wear a RUN DMC old skool shirt while working your ass off? I got this shirt at Old Navy! My friend – Kimmie -loves this shirt so much. The day I came in with my Star Wars hat and Run DMC shirt almost threw her over the edge. I was a walking billboard for pop culture.
http://www.runningskirts.com – High Performance running and fitness skirts, skorts and tops. High quality skirts and skorts designed by runners….made to go the distance.
I have 2 of these skirts that I ordered at the end of the fall season on sale. I am very excited to give them a try when the warmer weather hits. I know a few of my friends really like wearing them and don’t wait for warmer weather. Me, I like being warm heading into the gym as well as when I am working out.
Headbands
I constantly have problems with headbands falling off or slipping when I workout. It drives me crazy. Currently I wear the Goody Stay Put bands pictured here. But they slip even though they are called stay put.
So I was doing some research and came across these Bondi Bands. I am waiting for my order currently so I can see if they really are all that. I have high hopes for it and each year they donate 10% of their pretax profits to charity. So – how could I not like that?
Bondi Bands are composed of a unique blend of nylon, lycra, and spandex. The result is a stretchy yet form fitting band that holds up under the toughest hair styles and types.
I will be sure to let you guys know what I think. I ordered the one pictured to the left, one that says Heart your Core, and No Pain, No Gain. I used the discount code – 2010 for a 20% off discount. Let me know what headband type you use…
Funky & Fun Socks
Now I personally don’t wear fun socks while i workout -standard Adidas fare for me. But I have seen a lot of ladies don
fun knee high socks when they are working on their fitness. Mel over at The Clothes Make the Girl wrote a post about this a while back. She said knee high socks are one of her favorite things. She recommends this site – SockDreams.com.
I am not sure I am bold and daring enough to wear knee highs working out, but man I smile when I see pics of those that are. Look at how badass these Bad Ass socks are! Maybe I can convince the bootcamp ladies to wear these when we do Run Amuck in August!
So those are a few of the trends I have noticed in my fitness journey recently – what have you noticed?

Parentfinitions
0Momfinitions
Ever notice how parenthood inspires a whole new language? We call these words Momfinitions. Perhaps you recognize a few of these new parenting terms that haven’t quite made it into Webster’s—yet. Read some of our Momfinitions, and after you’ve had a hearty chuckle, feel free to submit your own Momfinitions in the comments below!
via Momfinitions | ParentsConnect.com – Parenting Advice, Parent Stories, and More!.
So the post above was sent to me by my friend Lori B and it had me laughing so hard- because no matter what sort of parent you are, every one of us has words we use that we can all relate to. It’s one of those great equalizers of parents, something we all have in common. I would prefer to call these “Parentfinitions” instead of their word “Momfinitions” because now-a-days you would probably hear both Moms and Dads uttering these phrases!
Lori shared a few of her Parentfinitions:
desswantish - I’m not hungry for my actual dinner, just gimme dessert because I NEEED it.
Poofbuggles - it’s the holiday for stuffed animals that is every day and the reason why THEY don’t have to go to school.
Gruffpumbles -it’s an expletive!??! which is used for all the words they should NOT say.
A few of these heard around my house:
the phantom – means one of the kids went potty and didn’t flush. “The phantom struck again”.
Hannahtude – Watch out, Hannah is in a crabby mood and giving us attitude.
I am sure you all have some around your house that you utter or even remember your ‘rents uttering on your behalf!
Share them with me!

Now let’s talk about this super funny show that I have recently discovered thanks to a few friends:
So now that I have the elliptical and have been using it in the evenings a few times a week and that allows me to finally get a chance to watch this show on ABC called Modern Family. Holy crap is this show funny. So many people recommended watching it for a while and I am so glad I finally checked it out.
I think what makes it funny is it hits the nail right on the head about families, relationships and parents dealing with “modern” kids. With each episode , I have found myself relating. I am just finishing up with the holiday episodes and the Xmas one was so good. The kids were accused of damaging the couch and when no one fessed up, the dad went right for the jugular and threatened to take away Xmas – tree and all. And he has a habit of making extreme threats and has to carry it out in order to be taken seriously with the kids. This sort of thing happens at Casa de Hoaglund often. We will make a threat without really considering the ramifications it has on the entire family and then regret using that as the weapon. I am sure every parent can relate. I can’t even begin to count how many times after I threatened to take something away, than regretted it afterward. Having an errand to run and telling the kids if they don’t come with me, they have to stay home and clean. And my kids – will totally call my bluff. Nate will continually say – ok, fine! Then what do I do??? I have to run the errand and then I resort to bribing…it’s a vicious cycle I tell ya! Or if you don’t eat dinner, you go right to your room for bed. They will say ok and head upstairs to their rooms. Shit, that’s not what I wanted the outcome to be.
This show is all about those experiences that happen to us all, no matter what the family apparently. The dad is married to a much younger Colombian woman who has a young son, the son is gay and is married to this super sensitive guy and has an adopted little girl, and the daughter is married with 3 kids, each equally challenging to rear but in different ways. Anyways, I hope you will check it out. You can watch episodes and get more information at ABC: http://abc.go.com/shows/modern-family. It certainly has helped make the time go by faster while getting in my extra cardio!!
Workout done – along with some observations
3Plumbline Training workout for today:
warmup
backwards lunges
straight leg lifts (right leg, left leg)
high knees
tuck jumps
Core
6in flutters
half pikes

ring dips
hang clean squats 25lb db
box scissor steps / tabatas
ballistic push press 65lb
A few observations from today’s workout:
- Hang clean squats never get any easier.
- Some people need to evaluate why they show up at 545a every camp — because it sure as hell doesn’t seem like it’s to workout.
- The pain is temporary – although I guess that “sore” isn’t really counted as “pain” when talking about this phrase.
- Someone told my trainer in another session that I have six pack abs. That made my day.
- I like upper body workouts.
What are your thoughts while you are working out?
Deep thoughts
1A few things are on my mind this morning and as I was driving around this AM, I found myself deep in thought about a bunch of random things.
Before I became active, I would never have described myself as particularly competitive. I have never cared who wins a board game or sports game. To me, it has always been the fun of the experience. This attitude of mine has pissed many a people off that have to play on my team. So this morning when everyone in my group training managed to figure out how to do a double under with a jump rope – but ME, I got pissed. Because I am challenged with poor coordination, it takes me longer to get things. When I started camp, I was doing the double jump jump rope style and I really had to work at the speed jump rope. So while I know it’s just a matter of time, practice and patience – I am pissed off. I hate that everyone else can do it and I can’t. It’s this newly found competitive streak that has been unleashed. I will be finding my jump rope tonite and practicing every day until I figure it out…
Another thing I thought about this morning while driving home from camp and then again to work this morning – I saw so many people smoking in their cars. Now, it is true I am a former smoker year’s back , but I could never see myself smoking again. None of the people in my community circle smoke – so it always amazes me how many people still do. How much is it now to buy cigarettes? I can’t even begin to describe how happy it makes me that it is common place now that bars and restaurants do not allow smoking. I went to a bar for my birthday celebration with the Plumbline ladies, and it was so nice to get home and not wreak of that horrendous cigarette smell. The people I saw this morning – they just really stood out to me and how when they are ready to quit, how much better they will look and feel.
Group Training
1Group Training at Plumbline this morning – there were 4 of us instead of the usual 6. I wore a Star Wars cap as I headed out the door. It’s cold that early in the morning — so I was really a walking billboard for Pop Culture this AM – Star Wars cap and Run DMC shirt. How fun am I?

Warmup - practice double unders which I still am not able to do!

0The role of nutrition in slowing Alzheimer’s disease
You might be surprised to learn that nutrition may become one of the cornerstones in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Over the past few years, medical research has strongly suggested that the progression of Alzheimer’s may be slowed by good nutrition. A nutrient-dense diet, in some cases, might even slightly reverse the progression of Alzheimer’s.
A lot of Alzheimer’s research is underway at the Neurosciences Institute and Dr. Forchetti described a number of ongoing clinical trials. One trial really caught my attention. It involves a nutrient-dense food product made by Dannon. Although the exact formulation of this food is a proprietary secret, Dr. Forchetti was able to tell me that it contains high doses of omega-3 oils, vitamin B complex, antioxidants, wheat germ, cereal proteins and other vitamins.
Medical research has shown that omega-3 oils and vitamins can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. However, most foods are not nutritionally dense enough and dietary supplements are necessary. Not everyone likes to take dietary supplements but the development of an effective, nutritionally dense food might be the answer.
This post says you “may be surprised”. I am not. Nutrition and health plays a vital role in EVERYTHING. This type or research is so interesting to me. Not only does this sort of information help Alzheimer’s patients, but I would image it also can help cancer research. Learning how nutrition plays a part in so many diseases can only help the broader understanding of how it affects everything.
I love this idea of teaching kids to cook. It not only helps reinforce a tradition of everyone eating together, it can also help teach healthy eating. The Kids’ Cooking Campaign is an annual event teaching children basic cooking skills. The purpose of this program is to help revive family mealtimes and the affection and communication that this time allows. Today’s busy families are not likely to mimic the days of old when families were able to sit down together for at least two meals a day, but according to studies, the family meal tradition is an important time that benefits far beyond nutrition. Sharing meals provides a setting for communicating that can strengthen family ties and stabilize relationships.
Skin Deep – Fast Food for Dieters Has Its Doubters – NYTimes.com.
A little late to the game, to talk about this I know, but this wasn’t really about eating Taco Bell. This was about a person making a choice to eat healthier, exercise more and — over two years — lost 54 pounds. As you no doubt know, I have done this and lost 25lbs. A bunch of other food joints are following suit: Dunkin Donuts, McDs, and of course Subway which did it a long time ago with Jared. It’s great that they are listening to their consumers and finding out that they want more options, but whether they are really healthier options seems to be in question. See below how one study found that main chain restaurants often do not report the calories accurately. There is no way to know how something is prepared when you eat out… Food for thought!
Others worry that the companies might not accurately report nutritional information, which is a legitimate concern. A study published this month in The Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that the caloric content of food from 29 Boston chain restaurants and 10 frozen meals sold in supermarkets averaged 18 percent more calories than the stated values.
