World Fitness Day 2010

0

The brainchild of Jane Fonda, World Fitness Day marks an annual initiative to highlight the importance of staying active and getting fit throughout life. In a recent interview, Fonda said of World Fitness Day: “Not only will it be a tremendous amount of fun and a spectacular celebration of good health, it is an amazing opportunity for Atlanta, Georgia, and the nation to strengthen the mind, body and spirit of our young people.”

Rest days are for the weak <just kidding>

0

Is it a bad thing that I decided to forgo a rest day to enjoy a beautiful day outside. I went for a 1.5 mi run and then mowed my yard all during my lunch hour.  There is something about getting outside and soaking in that Vit D and being physical that just makes you feel good.  I do have to admit though that the run was tough. My legs hurt and are really tight so that’s why I didn’t push myself to go longer.

I am so glad this weekend is here. The company that I work for is all about education and when you are in marketing, the period before Back to School is our busiest. Guess what time that is?? Spring through the Summer — so everyone in my department is crazy busy, short on patience, and long on work. Does not make for the funnest atmosphere but it is good we are busy.

I found myself in the crabbiest mood yesterday and took it out on some unsuspecting folks. I had a doctor’s appointment this week and I thought it was yesterday but apparently it was Weds. So I go  there on Thursday and the front desk lady was like Um, it was YESTERDAY! So I was like oh man, is there any way Dr can see me? It was just for a quick checkin. She says no I will have to reschedule you. So I said well i am out of meds, can you have someone write me some until my appt and she was like um I will have to write a note and you will have to come back. I said can you see if it can be done now so I dont have to come back until my appt. She says Have a seat…

A few mins later, she calls me over and has this guy with her. I explained the situation and he looks at me and says: Well, why did you miss you appointment. What was being said in my head, I guess I verbalized and looked at him and said “What kind of question is that?” I mean really — bc I wanted to inconvenience you and me and take a nap. I did now let’s move on. So I was ticked off from that moment on. So he says well what medication are you on that you need — in front of the desk, with other patients around – so I tell him – and he says well you can live without that for a few days — Um. is he my medical doctor and knows my particulars?? I don’t think so, so how is he able to even say that.  I said  — excuse me, I have to have my meds  and he says  – like I said – we will put a note in the Dr file and they will get back to you. I was like you 2 are very rude and he hands me his card and says report me.  Then he continues to talk to me so I looked at him and said You are still talking, but I am not listening to you anymore and turned to the desk lady and says when is the next appt? So she says when would you like it? I said Monday — she click click with her long nails — oh we have nothing Monday. I was like WTF did you just ask me that. then.. so I have to wait until WEDS. Now I get that I forgot my appointment, it has never happened before, but honestly, did they have to be so rude and unprofessional about it?

I laughed on the way to my car. I can not believe I said You are still talking …that is something Nate would say.  I have no idea what inside of me said that either. It’s very uncharacteristic of me – I was just ticked off.

Happy 6th Birthday Baby Nate!

0

6 years ago today Nathaniel Ryan Hoaglund was born. When he arrived he was whiter than anything I have ever seen. His hair and eyebrows were so white, it didn’t even look like he had any. From that day forward, life has been more fun and meaningful for our family. From the moment we started to meet his personality, he has had us laughing.

From the funny face he would make when he before he was 12 months old when we asked him to make it, to the “stealing” incidents – I have never laughed so hard.  Even this morning, I was telling him some memories from his birth and he says: Mommy, you keep talking and talking and talking. And then smiles at me like he knows he’s funny. Or the time I got mad at him and without any prompting he looked me in the eye and said: Mommy, I love you so much, and you are so pretty and I like your dress. The kid was like 4 YEARS old!

He loves to snuggle, and is really inquisitive and fearless at times. He makes friends easily and is easy going. The other day I took him for ice cream and I said – what if they don’t have what you want? He said: then I will get something else. Every day I learn something new about him.

He’s a good boy that likes to be naughty at times – which as long as it’s legal – keeps life interesting. I love my Baby Nate. And he will always be my baby. He asks Even when I live with someone else? I say YES – Always. Even when I am like 6 ft tall and taller than you? Yes – Always.

Happy Birthday Nate Dogg!

Plumbline Training:

Warmup x 2:
high knees
lunges

Core x 2

50 push-ups

workout:
1 mile run

box push-ups x 2
15db lunges (aka HELL)  (1 round at 25lb db)
65lb OH push press
45lb sandbag dead lifts x 2

Today’s 1 mile run was really tough on me. It was freakin’ cold outside..below 40 degrees and with cold air like that, my asthma kicks in majorly. I did manage a 8:11 min mile which is not too shabby but not as good as the previous 2 weeks.  I was thinking today about how my body is sore – always sore. Is there a point where a maintenance program is in order or is this the norm?  This week its my quads. They hurt when any sort of pressure is on them and then when I move them. I don’t mean hurt where it’s unbearable, just hurt like workout sore but a very hard workout sore.  Is this normal? Is this a good thing? Do I need to give my body a break and do cardio for a week with very little lifting to give my body recovery time. I don’t know but that was what was going through my mind this morning especially when I was suffering through the lunges.

Really? – The Claim – Lack of Sleep Increases Weight – Question – NYTimes.com.

I found this article interesting to me because I am living proof that this is really the case. When Nate was born – that little bugger did not sleep. He hated to be alone and Scott and I literally had 4 full nights of sleep in the first 8 months of his life. We both became different people – we snapped at one another, had no patience, walked around in an unmotivated fog and gained weight.  Sleep is important and never underestimate that –I appreciate every Zzzz I can get.

Scientists have known for years that skimping on sleep is associated with weight gain. A good example was a study published in 2005, which looked at 8,000 adults over several years as part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Sleeping fewer than seven hours a night corresponded with a greater risk of weight gain and obesity, and the risk increased for every hour of lost sleep.

STRETCH: Hip Flexors « STRETCH EXERCISE EAT.
Flexibility is key to achieving optimal performance so make sure to stretch out your Hip Flexors!

The hip flexors (also known as the iliopsoas or inner hip muscles) are a collection of three muscles: Psoas major, Psoas minor, and Iliacus). When flexed, these muscles work together to pull the femur upward.

I’m not doing that, It Makes Me Feel Silly « BW-PT.com.

We did BOSU balancing a few camps back and boy was it an eye opener. You wouldn’t think it would be that hard but it is. I  practice balancing as much as I can. You don’t even need equipment. My friend Shannon over at AZ Physix suggested simply balancing on one leg as practice.

When someone mentions core strengthening, most people think, “abs.” But, working your core is not simply about making your abs burn with crunches or even doing planks (for what feels like hours). Core training is about total conditioning for all the muscles that attach to you pelvi

Personal Health – ‘Chemo Brain,’ the Fog After Chemotherapy, Gets More Attention – NYTimes.com.

The reason this article/blog got my attention even though it’s not super recent is that I clearly remember Scotty saying he felt like he was in a fog. Not remembering things, feeling just “foggy”. Interesting that they can’t pinpoint who and when chemo patients will experience it. At least it helps to know it’s common.

As more people with cancer survive and try to return to their former lives, a side effect of chemotherapy is getting more and more attention. Its name is apt, if unappealing: chemo brain.

Family Adventure Ideas at REI

0

I received an REI catalog in the mail this week. I am not really an adventure sports enthusiast as you can tell by the type of workouts I do, but that is not to say that I haven’t recently been  interested in looking at different types of athletic endeavors to consider. Some of them may need specific gear. You never know! Anyways, while looking through the catalog I saw that they REI is launching a special Family Adventure program starting June 1st. Now why they would put that info in their catalog now and not have the URL at the very least WORKING is beyond me. Seems like very poor execution of the plan but that’s not the point of me sharing the information here…

How cool that they are targeting Family Adventures and giving tips on ways to incorporate fitness and healthy living into activities that are family based. I love it! And wanted to share it with you. Remember it’s not available online until June 1.

Make this summer different. Healthier. More Fun. More Educational. Starting June 1, our Family Adventure Program sets you up for excellent outdoor adventures: where to go, what to do, and how to do it well enough to impress your kids. Visit your local REI or REI.com/family-adventure (WHICH DOESNT WORK YET) to start your family’s best summer yet.

At local REI stores and at REI.com/family-adventure – you will be able to :

  • get a FREE REI Kid’s Adventure Journal where kids can log adventures and play games.
  • Find a list of family friendly hiking and biking trails in your area!
  • Share your adventures by posting pictures and tips
  • And of course GEAR UP at REI.

5-minute colon cancer test could save thousands of lives

5-minute colon cancer test could save thousands of lives – USATODAY.com.

LONDON (AP) — A five-minute colon cancer test could reduce the number of deaths from the disease by about 40%, a new study says.

British researchers followed more than 170,000 people for about 11 years. Of those, more than 40,000 had a “flexi-scope” test, an exam that removes polyps, small growths that could become cancerous.

ASPIRIN: May help colon cancer patients

REPORT: 40% of cancers preventable

The test involves having a pen-sized tube inserted into the colon so doctors can identify and remove small polyps. Researchers used the test on people in their 50s. In the U.K., government-funded colon cancer screening doesn’t start until age 60.
