Gluten: What You Don’t Know Might Kill You

I recently went Gluten free (paleo approach) in October to lose weight, but what I realized was that when I got rid of the gluten – I felt great. It was the culprit for my constant fatigue that had plagued me since i could remember. I was always tired for no logical reason — no one ever mentioned to look at what I was eating – only that maybe my lifestyle was causing it and I should try meds. 7 days after being off of all gluten – i could feel a fog lift. A palpable feeling — and felt fantastic! I finally lost the last few lbs I had struggled with for years — sleep better, exercise better – you name it! And when I do have a roll or bread or whatever — i feel horrible the next day in all sorts of ways. I call it a gluten hangover! So I think very carefully if what I am considering eating is worth it. Make sure you take the time and read this entire article – it’s good!

SOMETHING YOU’RE EATING may be killing you, and you probably don’t even know it! If you eat cheeseburgers or French fries all the time or drink six sodas a day, you likely know you are shortening your life. But eating a nice dark, crunchy slice of whole wheat bread–how could that be bad for you? Well, bread contains gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, spelt, kamut, and oats. It is hidden in pizza, pasta, bread, wraps, rolls, and most processed foods. Clearly, gluten is a staple of the American diet. What most people don’t know is that gluten can cause serious health complications for many. You may be at risk even if you don’t have full blown celiac disease. I want to reveal the truth about gluten, explain the dangers, and provide you with a simple system that will help you determine whether or not gluten is a problem for you.

Clues to Gluten Sensitivity

So I have heard all about gluten sensitivity. Was convinced that I have a sensitivity to it — been aligning with a Paleo view of eating — no wheat, rice, beans, anything with gluten, dairy. Fresh fruit, veggies, lean meat, nuts, berries — and would say I am probably 80-90% on target. I lost some weight, I feel great — and I know when I do have some bread or something that would be defined as ‘crap’ food – I can feel how it affects me in more ways than one.  But somehow, even knowing all of that — It never occurred to me that my son, Nate, maybe as well.

I read the article above and the first paragraph described my boy exactly:

Stephanie Meade’s 4-year-old daughter had constipation and threw temper tantrums.

Nate has had issues for as long as he has been around — so, finally I thought — hey why not try 2 weeks Gluten Free for him and see what happens. DUH! Why on earth did it take me this long to think about that!!! Starting yesterday, Nate went gluten free – although he ate dinner at his friends house and I told him not to eat macaroni & cheese, but guess what he ate?? Macaroni & Cheese and sure enough he has a bad stomachache.  Strange coincidence — I will keep you posted on the results.

Attempting to Conquer the Cartwheel

Happy St. Patty’s Day to all my Irish Friends!

I gotta say – I have been feeling so great about life. I feel empowered and in charge & I don’t know what is so different in me that it’s causing me to feel this way, but I feel great energy around me. Good things are coming for me – I can feel it! Spring is coming, birds are chirping — somebody slap me before I start believing in fairies too!

I was more excited than usual to head to my workout this AM because Coach Jerry promised me we would work on cartwheels. Cartwheels are one of those skills I never mastered as a kid and it has always irked me a bit. So – we didn’t have a lot of time this AM to do it, but we did learn the Hand, Hand, Foot, Foot transition and after some fiddling and trying to figure out which is my left and right — (no I am not kidding) — I did the first step in learning — Cartwheels and Driving a manual car will be things I conquer before I die!
