Now I have to go get ready for Cure By Design and my husband, Scott’s catwalk debut! I’m so excited for this event — to honor those that have survived cancer is so important and it benefits a great cause because we all know Cancer Sucks.

Cure by Design is an event in which the fashion, design and retail communities join forces with the local corporate community to benefit the American Cancer Society. The focus of this special evening is a fashion show that spotlights designer fashions and, more importantly, the cancer survivors who model them. These survivor models are living proof of the strides we are making in the fight against cancer, and their vibrant smiles portray a message of hope for the cure.
The money raised at Cure by Design enables the American Cancer Society to fund cutting-edge research, early detection and prevention education, advocacy efforts, and life-affirming patient services. By supporting Cure by Design, you are partnering with the American Cancer Society to help cancer patients in your community.

High School Students need to MOVE!

CDC: High school students don’t exercise enough

High school students aren’t doing much running – and when they do run, there’s a good chance it’s to a vending machine.

Roughly one-third of high school students in the U.S. drink two or more sodas, sports drinks, or other sugary beverages per day, but only 15% get the one hour of daily aerobic exercise that health officials recommend, according to the results of a nationwide survey released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Although 51% of students do engage in muscle-strengthening exercise (such as push-ups or weight lifting) at least three days a week, as guidelines recommend, the overall picture is less than ideal.

“Regular physical activity has so many benefits to kids,” says CDC researcher MinKyoung Song, Ph.D., who coauthored a report analyzing the survey results. “Not doing enough can lead to numerous problems later in life, like heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.”

A challenging workout of Jerks

0

Holy cow am I sore. I know I said I love being fit and SORE but this may be a bit over the top.  Note to self – doing 50m lunges for 3 rounds and then doing 200 squats over 2 days is just not the smartest approach to fitness for me. Most people skip one of those days due to their schedule, but not me and now I am paying for it.  I usually like the feeling of sore muscles — it means I worked hard but not sure this was what I call working hard. I am not hurt but I am hurting.  I am going to go use a foam roller and roll out my muscles to help loosen it all up a bit —

I had a rough time doing anything that required doing a squat or press with my legs, hamstrings. So I stopped before I completed my Push Jerk. My form was crap and I didn’t want to hurt myself. My soreness really got to me. In hindsight, I should have took a rest day today and did not listen to my internal voice. Note to self: LISTEN next time!

Today is the last day of school for the kiddos. What a crazy year this has been for us – but that’s life.  We had a bit of extra time this morning because our internet is out at the house, so I decided to walk the kids to school. Here is the pic I took as they headed on their way. You realize how fast time goes by when you look at a pic like this.

Today’s workout was even more torturous to me based on the workout yesterday. Doing 50m lunges are super painful and then having to do squats the following day –well that’s mean.

Inactivity and obesity may pose a greater cancer risk

Weighing Cancer Risks, From Cellphones To Coffee

You’re sitting in a freshly dry-walled house, drinking coffee from a plastic foam cup and talking on a cellphone. Which of these is most likely to be a cancer risk?

It might be the sitting, especially if you do that a lot.

Despite all the recent news about possible cancer risks from cellphones, coffee, styrene, and formaldehyde in building materials, most of us probably face little if any danger from these things with ordinary use, health experts say. Inactivity and obesity may pose a greater cancer risk than chemicals for some people.

Overweight America: Products adapt to accommodate

0

Overweight is the new normal

Americans are living large. Extra large. As in XXXXL large. As in baby-powdered-thighs large. As in wheezing, heaving, bust-the-car-suspension large.

Overweight has become the new normal, and society is straining to accommodate our ever-expanding waistlines. We plant plush bottoms on wider seats in theaters and toilet stalls, drape ourselves in plus-sized clothing, even go to our eternal rest in broader coffins.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than two-thirds of Americans are overweight, and a third, some 72 million people, are considered obese. From 1980 to 2008, obesity rates doubled for adults and tripled for children, with 17 percent, or 9 million children over 6, classified as obese.

The average American is 23 pounds heavier than the ideal body weight. Experts blame the usual bugaboos: lack of exercise and side-splitting food consumption.

Go Heavy, or go Home

wearing my strong=sexy shirt from Life as Rx'd

I feel better – finally and just have small remnants of my cold. It’s hard to believe summer is here already. Time goes by so fast. Seeing my niece this weekend really brought that home. Scotty’s illness really brought home to me how important family is. There are no other people in the world who get you as much as your family — it’s a combo of environment and genetics. I didn’t grow up with all 5 of my brothers and sisters — we were split between our mom and dad due to many complicated reasons, so I didn’t really get to know my older brothers and sisters. When we get together it’s really cool to me to see how we share some of the same mannerisms and personality traits. No one else in the world will be closer to you than your siblings. That’s one of the things I tell both my kids when they say they don’t like each other — no one else in the entire world share what they do. I am probably over sensitive about it because of how I was brought up.

This pic on the left is of my mom, my daughter, Hannah, and my niece Amelia this past weekend in New Jersey.  I just love that my Mom was able to spend time with both of her granddaughters this weekend. Next time, I will bring the boy too — make it a grand kid extravaganza! What could be better than that??!!

Ok, enough about that mushy stuff – now it’s on to the strong chick stuff — So, today was yet another heavy lift day. You know how I said I like these days and I know how important they are? I realize I need to clarify that after today’s workout. I do like lifting days, but I don’t like the super heavy lifting days. There is some element of it where it becomes really not fun when it is just super heavy. I felt the mood difference immediately. I am sure it’s because I can’t use my strong upper body and have to rely on technique and coordination — 2 things that challenge me daily.

Oh and that was a PR for me. I had done 205lb previously – but once Coach Jerry got a hold of me and switched up my form — I could not lift that thing if my life depended on it. So, while I did lift it and that counts — I do have to work on form because you could seriously mess up your back.

The number on the scale …

Attention Scale Addicts!

Thought it would be good to post something weight/scale related from a guy’s perspective. He makes some very fair points about the laws of attraction.

Have I made my point? The bottom line is that the scale just doesn’t have any really valuable information for you. Everyone has heard the obligatory “muscle weighs more than fat” ad nauseum, but scale addiction lives on. Even though, as I pointed out above, weight says virtually nothing about attractiveness, it continues to be the primary focus of most women and many men when it comes to aesthetic goals.

Meeting Isabel

I was pretty wiped out after my long drive back from NJ yesterday. 4 hours non-stop but no traffic so that was good. There are times when I really miss the east. It’s like I just fit in there — it’s my home. I had pizza and Italian food too.   It was so nice to get away — even a quick trip helps to refresh.  We stayed in a very nice hotel across the Hudson from NYC — with a great view.  The hotel had an indoor pool and those heavenly beds. It was so nice.  Also — if you wanted, you could order up some workout gear and have it delivered to your room to borrow during your stay and go workout at their gym. How cool is that? I of course didn’t do that because I was taking some much needed rest days — but I still thought it was cool.

When I am away on vacation, I don’t go crazy with my strict eating. I’m on vacation and I will not refuse pizza in NJ/NY. Of course I paid for it and then some with the way I felt — A few observations to share — not many restaurants in the Jersey City area are gluten free friendly. I was with a large group of adults and kids, so in the morning we met up at the local COSI. There is hardly anything that would meet Paleo guidelines and it was very frustrating.

My mom was all excited because she told me that we could order scrambled eggs at Cosi, but I am always suspicious. I asked if they were actual eggs and the lady said – no they are from a bag. I asked if they were gluten free? She looked at me like I was crazy… so I said can you check the bag label? She came back and sure enough –GLUTEN.  Then I was going to order a fruit smoothie — and I saw he was pouring syrup in it, so I asked if it was gluten free. He asked me what was gluten?!!  Yeah — pretty disappointing.  So I went with a fruit cup and took a Larabar out of my purse.  The fresh fruit cup was seriously the ONLY thing I could find that would be considered real food. Even the natural crunch bars had additives and soy. I was very disappointed and also very enlightened about how people are trained to eat.  Here is a major chain and they was no option for those with gluten allergies. COSI fails in my book.

I still have the remnants of a cold — and it has now spread to my ear. I can’t hear out of it and every time I take a deep breath, I cough.  So it made today’s workout a bit tough –and I was the dead last finisher! I don’t like to be the dead last finisher. It irks me –

Snatch is the world’s fastest lift and for me, it’s one of the toughest technique wise and it happens to be the only component of the Isabel WOD – one of the ladies of CrossFit I have not yet met –I met her today. If you look at the WOD time — 4:50 you would think it wasn’t that hard of a workout. Try doing 30 of those in a row as fast as you can — yeah it was tough. I would have liked a bonus round of something though afterwards since we were there for an hour — make it count.

I also did a few handstands and practiced my kip again. It’s getting to the point where it’s ridiculous that I don’t have the kip pull up yet. How many more ways can I try to get it to click with me? Don’t answer that —
