Happy Birthday U.S.A.
0
I made my fruit trifle for the holiday occasion and once again it was a hit! Although it does have angel food cake in it — you can easily make it with just the pudding and fruit and it will be just as good –
We headed over to our dear friends – Jim & Holly’s – for their annual neighborhood 4th of July parade and pool party to hang out, laugh, swim and eat good food. It was almost 3 years ago during this same time that we found out Scott had colon cancer. Holly and Jim have been wonderful friends to us. I can truly say they are like family to me. I love this holiday; it’s really a time to kick back and enjoy the time with your friends and family. Appreciate what you have and the freedom you enjoy.
Honoring Murph at CrossFit
0Yesterday was a great day. I headed to CrossFit Impavidus for their Memorial Day ‘Murph’ WOD. I did ‘Murph‘ last April and the weather was pleasant. Yesterday – not so pleasant. Hot, Humid, Hot — but this was a great WOD, and great way to honor a real hero. We started the day with National Anthem and read about Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy,, who was killed in Afghanistan June 28th, 2005. To do Murph with all the fellow athletes, many of them military — it took it to a bigger level.
So my Murph time for yesterday: 53:10. It was brutal. We were all drenched in sweat and just completely wiped out. We did a post WOD potluck as well – full of paleo and non-paleo food. It was really fun and great to spend time with some great people outside of the brutal body beatings aka WODs.
I got home and had to get ready for a small cook out – We invited some neighbors over. I love having people over because it forces you to clean up your house. Hannah walked in from the pool and said ‘Mom, the house is so clean and orderly.’ I said – let’s keep it this way ok? Easier said than done! Great cookout, great friends, great food. I even made homemade strawberry ice cream with strawberries picked from Great Country Farm. It was a great day — and I slept great last night!
Happy Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful women out there — whether you are a mom to your own kids, someone else’s kids, 4 legged kids — Mom’s are special people who show us the true meaning of love. My kids let me sleep in, and then showered me with love and home made presents, including “The Book of Awesome Moms” in which I came in on top, and an I Love My Mom book, and a plant and lots of drawings of me. Make sure you take time out today and call or visit with the “mom’ in your life…
Yesterday’s workout that included lunges made for a sore day today — Walking lunges with 25lb plate overhead can really make you appreciate rest days! I’m off to get some gluten free pizza with my family — going to go a bit off plan today with the eating, but still no gluten. It’s mother’s day after all —-
Attempting to Conquer the Cartwheel
0
Happy St. Patty’s Day to all my Irish Friends!
I gotta say – I have been feeling so great about life. I feel empowered and in charge & I don’t know what is so different in me that it’s causing me to feel this way, but I feel great energy around me. Good things are coming for me – I can feel it! Spring is coming, birds are chirping — somebody slap me before I start believing in fairies too!
I was more excited than usual to head to my workout this AM because Coach Jerry promised me we would work on cartwheels. Cartwheels are one of those skills I never mastered as a kid and it has always irked me a bit. So – we didn’t have a lot of time this AM to do it, but we did learn the Hand, Hand, Foot, Foot transition and after some fiddling and trying to figure out which is my left and right — (no I am not kidding) — I did the first step in learning — Cartwheels and Driving a manual car will be things I conquer before I die!

Eight Leadership Lessons from Martin Luther King, Jr.
0Eight Leadership Lessons from Martin Luther King, Jr.
Today is Martin Luther King Day in the United States. On this day we celebrate the life and work of one of the greatest leaders the world has ever known. I want to take a few minutes and reflect on what is commonly referred to as his “I Have a Dream” speech.
It helped give me some inspiration to write my K12, Inc Blog post:
Teaching Kids About Great Leadership to honor MLKDay http://bit.ly/hcfM8a
January 17, 2011 marks the 25th anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday and many states are encouraging Americans to use this holiday as a way to give back. Make sure you and your family visit the MLK Day of Service website to find get information about this effort and find projects that “strengthen communities, empower individuals, bridge barriers, and create solutions” – all actions that can help make our world a better place to live.
Here’s to helping create the next generation of Great leaders!
Take some time to share some of the great leaders in your life and how they continue to inspire you by leaving a comment below.
Happy Birthday Scotty!
040 is the new 30
Today is a special day — 40 years ago, a great man was brought into this world. That great man is:
I am the luckiest lady in the world that I met him 15+ years ago.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY!!
A White Christmas
0Having kids gives you a whole new perspective on the holidays. My kids woke up at 6A – screaming, yelling, running around. They did not appreciate waiting for their Mom and Dad to get up and prep their coffee before they could explore the treasure trove that was under their tree.
We opened the gifts – the kids were so happy and appreciative. Then I went back to bed only to be woken up by the kids screaming yet again — this time about snow. A White Christmas may be in the cards for Northern Virginia!
Have a wonderful holiday!
You will get Back on Even Ground
1
I loved this post by Mel over at The Clothes Make the Girl — because she calls it like she sees it. I am trying to be realistic and realize it’s ok to indulge once in a while — it doesn’t make you a failure or a bad person. You let yourself indulge – nothing more, nothing less. You get back on track the next day — nothing to panic about. Getting on track may mean your journey has more uphill than originally mapped out — but eventually you are back on even ground and you had fun getting there!
So dear readers, if you indulge in your favorite holiday treats, enjoy every bite and remember that there might be some consequences to be paid… but just like Scrooge, you can be redeemed by lessons learned, good behavior, and the love of the season.
So – for those of you enjoying the spirit of Christmas today — Relax & Enjoy. I for one am going to sleep in, let my body recover after all those brutal workouts this week — and enjoy the time with my husband and kids.
I hope you are enjoying the love of your family, friends and life! Life is so short and has lots of unexpected twists and turns — so take today to appreciate all you have!
2 A-Day Workouts
1Yesterday was a crazy busy day — Scotty and I headed out to finish our last minute holiday shopping and then we spent a few hours wrapping the gifts. This is pretty good for us as we usually wait until the night before so we are already ahead of last year’s schedule.
Then I headed out to another practice WOD from Crossfit Impavidus*. Now if you are keeping count – Weds eve I did a WOD, Thurs AM I did boot camp and Thurs eve I did another Crossfit Impavidus WOD and this one was a doozy!
WUp
3 rounds
sampson stretch
60 jump ropes
butterfly situps
PVC Shoulder stretch
OH squat
Skill Work
KB Swings 18lbs
WOD
6 RFT (rounds for time)
bear crawl
25 push ups
50ft broad jump
20 35lb KB swings
I have a feeling I am forgetting an exercise but we had to yell round after each round bc after the 1st one – you seriously are so delirious you can’t count. After my run outside yesterday morning — my lungs were hating this workout and I was still coughing and catching my breath for an hour post workout.
Then I rushed home – got dressed to head out to a friend’s holiday party. I am glad I went because I ran into some old friends and met some new ones! Kids were invited and that was definitely a plus! Both my kids made some new friends and when it was time to go – they both weren’t ready. That’s a sign of a successful party for us! I had not eaten dinner either so while there I stocked up on turkey, sausage and veggies and salad they had out. I was starving after that workout — and had 2nd helpings of protein and ended with a gourmet german chocolate cupcake! Yum!
We got home late — got to bed late — and yes, I still planned on getting up for boot camp at 5A.
*Crossfit Impavidus has contracted me to do some social marketing on their behalf — Although I have always been a fan of HIIT and Crossfit so my opinions are my own!
