Double Unders — Making some progress!

0

I'm so lucky to get to see this every morning...brings me so much joy.

I love those days when you just aren’t feeling your best and contemplated not going to your workout but you do and you have end up having a breakthrough!  They come when you least expect it!

Warmup
lap around both bldgs
2x
21 push ups
15 pull ups
9 KTE

Skill
Handstand forward roll
Cartwheels

WOD
3 RFT
50 Double Unders
75 Squats
18:26 R’xd

I am determined to not scale when DU’s show up on the board. I mentally just have to forget that I will come in DFL and realize that it’s because I am getting better. So the breakthrough? I was able to string 6+ DUs together! That is the most I have gotten EVER and boy I was winded. But the feeling of satisfaction I got from knowing that I was indeed improving was just the success I needed today.

I started regularly with CrossFit Impavidus at the beginning of February and the progress I have made in the almost 4 months since then is really amazing. DUs, Kipping Pull Ups, Hand Stands, CartWheels, Knees to Elbows, Deadlilfts… Goes to show you that sometimes we all need to shake things up, make some changes even when you have fears and doubts about it.

A few observations — I was really tired after Round 1 and that’s when the DU’s started to string together. I think because I was so tired – I let go, relaxed a bit — and there you go. It’s something about not being able to be in control. I am going to try this theory out with pull ups too. I get so tired that I even thinking about what to do is challenging and that’s when they technique takes over — muscle memory kicks in.

Yesterday, at work – our HR department hosted a catered breakfast for us all. I took the fruit, eggs, bacon — all paleo. They did have home made biscuits so I made an exception and had one– I love this restaurant’s biscuits. I didn’t get sick or anything but what I noticed was that last night, I was restless and woke up a few times and then during the warmup this morning — I didn’t have as much energy to push through the pull ups like I normally do. I have no proof that it’s because of the wheat/gluten I had yesterday, but it had me wondering — what do you think?

I’m not going to lie — getting back on the Paleo wagon has been tough since heading out on vacation. I didn’t go hog wild during my trip but certainly didn’t do my Paleo focused eating. Arizona is made for Mango margaritas, guacamole,  chips, salsa and ice cream.  At least in my excuse created mind. I am not of the mind that you can’t live a life that enjoys food once in a while — I was taking a break from my daily life and that means letting loose with the idea that coming back to my life includes getting back to my passions and focus.  So – I returned feeling renewed and ready to go back to the routine. It has been proving a bit difficult. It’s almost like ‘once you open that door, it’s hard to close again’.

Yesterday was my 13th wedding anniversary — Scott and I got married in Las Vegas Nevada, 13 years ago. Who knew back then that we would turn out to be 2 suburbia folk, working white collar jobs, raising 2 great kids? Well – in all honesty, my life has more than I thought was possible for me —  I am lucky to have so much in my life!  We went out to dinner last night and that included dessert!  So — now that I realize that it’s a slippery slope – I need to commit to getting back on the straight and narrow. I can feel how different I feel and I don’t mean that in a good way.

Warmupx2
Sampson Stretch
10 Pass Thrus
10 OHS
10 Pull ups (3 dead hangs min)
10 Hollow Rockets
10 Ring Digs
30 Double Unders (once again, closing my eyes seems to work)

Skill
Snatch progressions

WOD
7 RFT
7 Power Snatch
7 Snatch Balance
7 OHS

I was solo today during the workout so Coach Jerry and I worked a lot on snatch progressions. I seemed to have a break thru with them after getting super frustrated time after time which is great! It’s the small successes that add up — and we spent a considerable amount of time on the skill part today. So much so, that we didn’t leave a lot of time to do the WOD, so I ended up doing 3 rounds before my form broke down and I stopped. I started off with 53lbs and ended up doing 45lbs during the WOD — scaling so that I could do it with proper form makes a difference!

Before I left, I also did some handstands and Coach Jerry gave me some pointers about doing handstand push ups now that my handstands are improving. I have been practicing a lot and he shared with me this quote:

Gluten Free and Be Done With It

Will a gluten-free diet improve your health?

(Health.com) – Sarah Cooper was a new mom in her mid-20s, busily juggling her family and a career as an electrical engineer, when everything came to a halt.

She lost all her energy. She developed acne. And she began experiencing gastrointestinal problems: bloating, diarrhea, cramping, constipation. Her doctors, thinking something must be missing from her diet, put her on various vitamins, none of which helped.

“It was all I could do to go to work,” she says.

After years of failed treatments, Cooper’s luck changed. She saw a doctor who suspected she might have celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that can appear at any age and is caused by an intolerance to gluten.

A protein found in wheat, barley, and rye (and countless food products — like bread and pasta — that contain those grains), gluten gradually damages the intestines of people with celiac disease, preventing the absorption of vitamins and minerals and setting off a slew of related health problems, which can include fatigue and bad skin.

Challenging Conventional Wisdom: Gary Taubes

Gary Taubes on “Why We Get Fat”

Yes, Yes, Yes.  Eating the crap foods creates cravings for more crap food — and you are living in a vicious cycle.  That’s why I think eating a Paleo like diet is key. Cut out most carbs and eat whole, clean food —  not processed – you are good to go. Look into the science more and see what you think –

Taubes challenges the conventional wisdom that says if we just eat less and exercise more we will lose weight. He contends that carbohydrates – sweets, breads and fruit – and not fatty foods are to blame for our nation’s rising obesity rate.

We’re not fat because we’re gluttons with no willpower who sit around watching too much TV, he says. Instead, we become couch potatoes because we are getting fat by eating too much pasta and rice, and too many cookies. That diet brings on a vicious cycle of craving more of the same carbohydrates that sap our energy and pack on the pounds.

“It’s the most important issue in medicine today,” argues Taubes, a fellow at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health. Being fat increases our risk of heart disease and diabetes, he says, as well as cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Diets that require a steep drop in caloric consumption only allow us to drop pounds temporarily but are not a cure for obesity, he says.

…DeVane and Taubes agree that exercise alone is not the answer because people dramatically underestimate how much exercise is required to burn off pounds. And, Taubes says, exercise will just make you hungrier.

Paleo does a body good

Grains? We Don’t Need No Stinking Grains!.

Another person who has found ‘paleo’ eating. I thought this was a really good post by someone who discovered paleo and how it worked out for them. Hope you find some inspiration in it!

Many people have asked me why I’ve been trying this diet this month. They can’t fathom that grains or legumes may be bad for you. They can’t comprehend that eating as much meat as I’ve been eating can be a healthy thing. These concerns are understandable based upon how ingrained certain food groups are in our culture. To be honest, the amount of information available about the paleo diet is staggering and I haven’t read all of it yet. But I have read some and generally buy into what the research says.

But how do I feel? How has my body responded?

In a word, “FANTASTIC!”
My sweet cravings have mostly disappeared now that I’m no longer addicted to sugar.
My body feels great.
I’m noticeably leaner in the midsection.
I’m stronger at the gym.
My energy levels are more consistent throughout the day

Thoughts from Shopping on a Sunday Afternoon

Today is a rest day –and pulling those sleds and flipping those tires yesterday made this rest day much appreciated!

I went to Wegman’s for my weekly grocery shopping pilgrimage. I probably spend at least another 20 bucks a week buying gluten free stuff for Nate. It’s mind boggling that gluten is found in just about everything we eat. To ensure it’s not – it costs extra $$. And to be honest – a lot of it tastes like crap as we found after spending the cash. It’s trial and error and researching to find what a 6 year old will eat —

While I was there I couldn’t help but notice once again — the stuff that people buy in their carts.  It’s a lot of crap — soda, chips, ice cream, white bread, sugary cereals – all staples of the American diet.  It really does show in what they look like too — slightly to more than slightly overweight living in suburbia people. I wish that everyone could realize what eating like that day in and day out does to their bodies –and learning how to eat the way we are designed would make them feel so much better!  Some day, people will start to realize that what we we were taught about proper nutrition was not really about proper nutrition and more about politics and economics —

I’m not perfect — I had pizza last night for instance. But I do eat Paleo 80-90% of the time and it is so ingrained in me now that I can feel what eating crap does to my body — it’s not good people.

Steve’s Original for the WIN!

Last weekend, I tried a Paleo Krunch Bar from my friend Jason – and that was all I needed — it was Delish! Seriously, folks.

A delicious blend of coconut, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds and honey, PaleoKrunch fits into your bag and can answer any snack attack. Perfect for people following Zone® or Paleo®

I went home and ordered a batch of them along with their Paleo Krunch cereal. I really miss cereal now that I am Paleo, but this cereal paired with coconut milk — perfect substitute. It’s like eating granola which is close enough for me.

In addition to being delicious, Steve’s Original gives back to the community in a really meaningful way.

15% of proceeds from PaleoKits, PaleoKrunch, and other Steve’s Original products go to the Steve’s Club National Program to help bring fitness, nutrition, and personal development to youth across the country – one kid at a time.

So while a bit on the pricey side – its good, high quality, paleo friendly food that not only meets nutritional needs, it also helps others. Steve’s Original for the WIN!

Bear Down Arizona!

Bear Down Arizona — What a great win last night over Duke to land themselves in the Great 8 — What a great story this will make —

I took today as a rest day. After all those deadlifts yesterday, my back is feeling it. It’s not the type of pain where I hurt it but more like – yeah I used those muscles pain.

After my cartwheel yesterday, I started hearing about other people who never mastered it either. It’s one of the great things about using social media, whether it be blogging or facebook, you find out you are not alone. I seriously thought I was one of the very few kids who never learned how to do one during my youth. Well what do you know –i am not alone!

I wanted to post an update on my son Nate and how he’s been doing since he went Gluten Free. I have to tell you, to me it’s like night and day. He seems happier, is sleeping better — and seems to be more regular. Could this be the issue he has had since he started eating regular food?? We had such a rough time with him as a baby – I am not thinking it was because he wasn’t feeling so hot. No one ever mentioned the possibility that his diet could affect his mood and sleeping patterns and I didn’t know better to look at his diet. How frustrating that doctors don’t mention it as something to consider based on family history –

Obesity is a huge threat

Panel: Obesity is century’s greatest public health threat

While I agree with some of these guidelines — but most of the actual food ones, I call foul! As you know – I am a believer in the Paleo view on eating: lean meats, nuts, berries, fruits, veggies. Clean eating at its purest — no wheat products anywhere! Now I don’t follow it 100% all the time — but it’s my main approach to eating and i have never felt better.

The final 2010 dietary guidelines will be released later this year by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Department of Health and Human Services.

About two-thirds of adults and one-third of children in the United States are overweight or obese. The advisory committee highlighted four major steps:

Reduce excess weight and obesity by cutting calorie intake and increasing physical activity.

Shift to a more plant-based diet that emphasizes vegetables, cooked dry beans and peas, fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Increase the intake of seafood and fat-free and low-fat milk and milk products, and eat only moderate amounts of lean meats, poultry and eggs.

Significantly reduce intake of foods containing added sugars and solid fats, which contribute about 35% of the calories in the American diet. Cut sodium intake gradually to 1,500 milligrams a day and lower intake of refined grains, especially those with added sugar, solid fat and sodium.

Meet the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. Those recommend that adults get at least 2½ hours of moderate-intensity physical activity each week, such as brisk walking, or 1¼ hours of a vigorous-intensity activity, such as jogging or swimming laps, or a combination of the two types. Children and teens should do an hour or more of moderate-intensity to vigorous physical activity each day.

The report calls for many changes in the food environment, including:

•Improve nutrition literacy and cooking skills, and motivate people, especially families with children, to prepare healthy foods at home.

•Improve the availability of affordable fresh produce through greater access to grocery stores, produce trucks and farmers’ markets.

•Encourage restaurants and the food industry to offer health-promoting foods that are low in sodium; limited in added sugars, refined grains and solid fats; and served in smaller portions.

Nate is going Gluten Free

Clues to Gluten Sensitivity

So I have heard all about gluten sensitivity. Was convinced that I have a sensitivity to it — been aligning with a Paleo view of eating — no wheat, rice, beans, anything with gluten, dairy. Fresh fruit, veggies, lean meat, nuts, berries — and would say I am probably 80-90% on target. I lost some weight, I feel great — and I know when I do have some bread or something that would be defined as ‘crap’ food – I can feel how it affects me in more ways than one.  But somehow, even knowing all of that — It never occurred to me that my son, Nate, maybe as well.

I read the article above and the first paragraph described my boy exactly:

Stephanie Meade’s 4-year-old daughter had constipation and threw temper tantrums.

Nate has had issues for as long as he has been around — so, finally I thought — hey why not try 2 weeks Gluten Free for him and see what happens. DUH! Why on earth did it take me this long to think about that!!! Starting yesterday, Nate went gluten free – although he ate dinner at his friends house and I told him not to eat macaroni & cheese, but guess what he ate?? Macaroni & Cheese and sure enough he has a bad stomachache.  Strange coincidence — I will keep you posted on the results.
